The UEFA Champions League is the most watched football tournament competition around the world after the FIFA World Cup. It is also the most prestigious football tournament in the world. The Champions League was founded 69 years ago and was then known as the European Cup, but it was later re-branded in 1992 to its current name.
In every football tournament, clubs or individual players set or break records. In this article, we are going to look at ten records in the UEFA Champions League that have yet to be broken over the past 69 years.
MOST TITLES – 15 CUPS
Real Madrid has won more titles in the Champions League than any other football club in Europe. They have lifted the title fifteen times and are currently the defending champions, finishing thrice as the runners-up this season. Coming in second with the most titles is the Italian side Ac Milan, with seven titles, followed closely by Bayern Munich and Liverpool, with six titles each.
FASTEST GOAL – 10.12 SECONDS
The goal was scored in the 10.12 seconds after the kick-off by a Dutchman (Roy Makaay) in 2007. The Bayern Munich player utilized the mistake made by Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid) at kick-off.
YOUNGEST PLAYER – 16 YEARS
The youngest player to play in the tournament was Youssoufa Moukoko who made his appearance for Borussia Dortmund at only the age of 16 years.
MOST GOALS IN A SINGLE SEASON – 17 GOALS
In the 2013/14 season, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a total of 17 goals in a single UCL season, and surprisingly the only player that came close to beating this record is actually himself again.
MOST GOALS IN A SINGLE MATCH – 12 GOALS
The match between Borussia Dortmund vs Legia Warszawa in 2016 was a game raining with goals, the ball found its way into the net 12 times and Dortmund won the match 8-4. Bayern Munich came close to breaking the record when they thrashed Dynamo Zagreb 9-2 on the 17th of September 2024 but they had set a record also of becoming the first team in the UCL to score nine goals in a match.
MOST GOALS FOR ONE CLUB – 120 GOALS
The Argentine legend scored 120 goals for FC Barcelona making him hold the record of the player with the most goals from playing for one club.
MOST APPEARANCE WITHOUT WINNING THE TROPHY – 131 GAMES
Gianluigi Buffon retired from his professional football career without lifting the UCL trophy despite having the most appearances in the tournament with 131 games played. The legendary goalkeeper also holds the record for the most final defeats without a victory.
MOST RED CARDS AWARDED – 4
Sergio Ramos, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Davis each have received four red cards in the UCL tournament.
MOST CLEAN SHEETS – 995 MINUTES
Arsenal holds the record for the most consecutive clean sheets in the 2005/06 season, they played without conceding a goal for almost 100 minutes between September 2005 and May 2006.
HIGHEST ATTENDANCE – 115,500
The match between Barcelona and PSG in the 1994/95 season at the Nou Camp stadium attracted 115,500 spectators and was recorded as the highest attendance in the UCL.
Cristiano Ronaldo is considered as the G.O.A.T in the UEFA Champions League records despite not being in play after moving to Saudi Arabia with some of his not broken records like most assists (42), most penalties scored (19), top goal scorer (141), longest goal-scoring streak (11 consecutive games) and most matches played (187 games).
