It was first held as the Football League Cup in 1960/61 then later changed to the Carabao Cup at the start of the 2017/18 season when a Thai energy drink brand known as carabao started sponsoring the League Cup. The Carabao Cup holds the top three best domestic football competitions in England alongside the Premier League and FA Cup, organized by the English Football League (EPL) it comprises 92 football clubs in total all within the top four levels of the EFL system that is the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two.

The competition starts with 72 teams kicking off in the first round. At the same time, Premier League clubs join the competition in round two, and clubs that qualified for the UEFA Champions League/Europa League have the privilege of joining in round three. Carabao Cup normally goes up to seven rounds, between rounds one and five also known as the quarter-final usually each tie is a one-legged scenario with penalties deciding the winner in case the match ends in a draw. The semi-finals which are the round six are chosen by each team playing home and away to earn a place in the final spot which takes place at Wembley Stadium normally in February annually. The winner of the Carabao Cup not only receives the EFL Cup but secures a spot in the UEFA Europa League.
