In football the term set piece is used to refer to a situation when the ball is on open play maybe due to a foul especially in the forward area of the opponent side. Set pieces can either be a free kick towards the opponent’s goal or a corner kick, throw-ins and penalty kicks can also be categorized as set pieces.

Set pieces can be advantageous to the team if taken properly. Players are efficiently trained by their coaches during training sessions on how to handle a set piece during a game. Players may execute what they trained on and score a goal during set pieces. The tactics used during set pieces are different types of movements, blocking, creating chances, or crowding the goalkeeper but not committing a foul to the opponent.

Players with either form of height or strength are considered to be in the box in case of a set piece so as to head the ball into the net, mostly defenders move into the box in case of corner kicks since they are good in headers. Every team have a specific player that is good at taking these set pieces.

Arsenal football club are considered the best team in set pieces in Europe, they have netted 52 set-piece goals since August 2021. The form Brazilian footballer Juninho Pernambucano is known as the best free kick taker of all time having scored 77 goals from free kicks, the most in football history.
