MAN OF THE MATCH EXPLAINED

The Man of the Match award is given to the most outstanding performance from a player during the game on the pitch. Every sport has its special way of giving out the award. In football, the Man of the Match (MOTM) award is usually given to a player to the winning team even though a player from the defeated team can be crowned MOTM depending on the player’s incredible performance. In most sports especially football the MOTM is decided by a panel of judges who consists of journalists, former players/coaches and analysts who are experts.

Football players who score a hat-trick or goalies who keep a clean sheet during a game are most likely to receive the award.  This season 2024/25 in the Premier League, football fans in every corner of the world can pick their Man of the Match simply by voting, fan can cast their votes on the Premier League website after the referee blows the final whistle to end the game. The MOTM in the Premier League is given a small black and gold trophy while in the UEFA Champions League season 2023/24 the MOTM player was presented by a PlayStation.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has received the Man of the Match award 395 times in his entire career, making him the player with the most MOTM awards in football history. Cristiano Ronaldo comes in second with 176 Man of the Match awards in his football career, followed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic with 116 awards.

Other sports that recognize the Man of the Match awards include Cricket, Ice Hockey, and Rugby.
