Football can be dramatic during the last minutes, also known as injury time. A team may be leading throughout the game, but eventually, the score-line changes in the dying minutes. The last-minute goals may be an equalizer for the scoring team or the scoring team taking the lead. Some of the last-minute goals in football history are hard to forget, especially if it was a final or a derby match. Here is a look at the seven most iconic last-minute goals in football history.

  • ANDREAS INIESTA (CHELSEA vs BARCELONA)

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMIS 2009.

It was during the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal at the Stamford Bridge. The first leg ended in a goalless draw at the Camp Nou. Chelsea took the lead in the first half when Michael Essien scored in the ninth minute, and Barcelona was reduced to ten men after Eric Abidal was sent off.

In the 93rd minute of the game, Lionel Messi gave Iniesta a superb pass on the edge of the box, which was struck into the top corner. Due to the away goal rules, this gave the visitors an equalizer and a win.

  • SERGIO AGUERO (MANCHESTER CITY vs QPR)

2011/12 EPL SEASON.

It was the last match of the 2011/12 Premier League season and Manchester United and Manchester City had the same points into the final match day but City had a goal difference advantage. Manchester United knew they had won the title already since City were trailing 2-1 into the injury time but Dzeko equalized for City in the 92nd minute and Aguero scored the most dramatic goal in Premier League history in the 94th minute helping Man City win the title after 44 years.

  • DENIS BERGKAMP (NETHERLANDS vs ARGENTINA)

1998 FIFA WORLD CUP Quarterfinals

  The match at the 1998 World Cup in France was heading to extra time as both teams had a goal each (1-1), but in the dying minutes of the game, a long pass was launched into the Argentine penalty area in the 90th minute. Bergkamp controlled the ball professionally and comfortably beating the defender and past the Argentine goalkeeper leading his team to win the match.

  • SERGIO RAMOS (REAL MADRID vs ATHLETICO MADRID)

2013/14 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

It took Real Madrid 12 years to reach yet another Finals after they won their last title back in 2002. Athletico Madrid took the lead in the first half and they decided to implement in defensive formation, but in the 94th minute, Sergio Ramos headed the ball past the goalkeeper and the game went to extra time due to the equalizer.

Real Madrid won the game 4-1 in the extra time played and won their tenth UEFA Champions League title.

  • LUCAS MOURA (AJAX vs TOTTENHAM)

2019 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMIS

Ajax had won the first leg 1-0 in London and in the second leg, the Home side scored two goals in the first half bringing the aggregate to 3-0in favor of the Dutch side. Tottenham responded with two quick goals in less than five minutes through Lucas Moura, In the 96th minute Moura completed his hat-trick of the game winning the game 2-3 and securing a place in the Finals which was their first-ever finals in UEFA history.

  • NACER CHADLI (BELGIUM vs JAPAN)

FIFA WORLD CUP 2018

Japan was leading the game 2-0 despite Belgium having most of the possession, but thanks to goals from Vertonghen and Fellini, the score line was 2-2 as the game was closing to its 90th minute. Belgium eventually won the game with the greatest comeback in World Cup football history through Nacer Chadli’s late close-range strike making the score line 3-2 in favor of the Belgians.  

  • DAVID BECKHAM (ENGLAND vs GREECE)

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER 2001

England was losing the game to Greece as they were trailing 1-2 which meant that they would not qualify for the 2002 World Cup but a draw would see them through. During the 90+ minutes of the game England was awarded a free-kick (30 yards out), and Beckham was to take the free-kick which he converted into a goal changing the score-line to 2-2. The stadium will be remembered for the last-minute goal screamers from England fans as they qualified for the World Cup.
