Probably you have heard the phrase ‘game in hand’ used by football fans, and coaches or read it somewhere. When a team has a game or games in hand, it simply means that they have more game or games left to play than their opponents, it is an advantage for the team since they have the possibility of gaining the points left and they already know the current positions of their opponents who have played more game or games. A team can have one, two or even three game-in-hand matches depending on how the fixture turned out in the current season.

But a game in hand can also be good or bad for the team, depending on whether the team is near the top or the bottom of the League table. A game in hand can create stress for the team players, especially if the match is a win-or-lose situation for the team against their opponent.

Games in hand are usually given to a team in different situations.

  • Abandoned matches may be due to bad weather or riots inside the stadium, and the officials decide to end the match, which will be scheduled for another day.
  • Postponed matches may be due to a certain team being scheduled to play in a different tournament the same day or weekend they are supposed to play in a League fixture.
  • A critical tragedy may occur to a certain team maybe a player dies on the pitch or a day before the match day and the football officials decide to postpone the match.

To the gamblers who placed a bet and a match was either postponed or abandoned the match is considered void and the odds of the abandoned match are removed from one’s bet slip, but other betting sites will not consider the match void especially if the match is re-scheduled quite soon.
