When a goalkeeper prevents the opponent from scoring a goal the entire 90+ minutes of the match is said to have kept a clean sheet. It is rare for a goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet for several consecutive matches, during the Premier League season of 1992/93 a total of 17 goalkeepers have managed to keep more than 100 clean sheets in the Premier League. A goalie with the most clean sheets by the end of the season is crowned an award known as the golden glove, here are the best five goalkeepers of all time with the most clean sheets.
PETER CECH – 397
After Cech retired from professional goalkeeper player he chose to play ice hockey and he plays as a goaltender for Oxford City Stars. Cech has 397 clean sheets from 810 appearances, he holds the record of the most clean sheets in the Premier League history. He has played for five clubs in his senior professional career, he started his senior career at Chmel Blsany then moved to Sparta Prague, Rennes, Arsenal and finally Chelsea. Cech holds the record of winning the Premier League Golden Glove with two different teams.
GIANLUIGI BUFFON – 501
The Italian goalkeeper is said to have the most clean sheets in football history, he has 501 clean sheets from 1103 match appearances and has the most appearances in the Serie A League. He started his senior career at Parma in 1995. He helped the club to win the Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup and Supercoppa Italiana in 1999 before joining Juventus in 2001 for a world record fee for a goalkeeper. Buffon was awarded the Golden Glove in the 2006 World Cup competition in which his Italian squad were crowned World Cup champions.
EDWIN VAN DER SAR – 440
The former Manchester United legend is well known for superb saves on the field of play, he holds the second most clean sheets in football history with 440 clean sheets from over 600 appearances. He retired from professional football in 2011 having played for Ajax, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United and later retired by playing for VV Noordwijk in the Netherlands. Van Der Sar has won several awards including the Best European Goalkeepers and UEFA Club Goalkeepers in 2009, he also has set a world record by not conceding a League goal for 1311 minutes played.
PEPE REINA – 359
The Spaniard has played for more than 10 teams in his senior career and now currently plays for a Serie A club named Como. Reina has 359 clean sheets from 956 appearances, he played for Liverpool most of his career won three Premier League golden gloves and won the World Cup in 2010.
IKER CASILLAS – 440
Casillas has 440 clean sheets from 962 appearances, he holds the record for the most clean sheets in UEFA Champions League history. Casillas was placed fourth in the 2008 Ballon d’Or and has been selected for the UEFA Team of the Year six consecutive times. He retired from professional football while playing for FC Porto.
David Benjamin James a former English professional goalkeeper has conceded more goals in the Premier League than any other goalie, he has conceded 645 goals in his entire career.
